Blue roofs are suitable for a large variety of building types from domestic to commercial. Blue Roofs place storm water attenuation within the building footprint, this is ideal for limited ground spaces in urban environments.
Blue Roofs, initially used as storage tanks for rainwater harvesting, are part of SuDS best practise and are facilitated to control attenuation following heavy rainfall. They are situated above the water-flow and reduce layers on an inverted application at podium and roof levels.

There has been much research into blue roofs, covering environmental aspects as well as improvement of their performance. ABG (associated with the University of East London and the University of Sheffield) have undertaken much of this research and found that they do not affect the functionality of green roofs and are suited for a wide range of applications.
